Several Upper West Side movie houses have closed in recent years. New Yorker Films, which previously ran other movie theaters on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, has operated Cinema Studio since 1977. Lincoln Plaza Theaters, a three-screen theater at 61st Street and Broadway that is also owned by New Yorker Films, has the same type of format, showing foreign films and American art films that do not have a wide commercial following. Among the films that premiered at the theater were Claude Chabrol's ''Story of Women,'' Jim Jarmusch's ''Down by Law,'' Spike Lee's ''She's Gotta Have It,'' and the more recent ''Sex, Lies and Videotape.'' When Cinema Studio shuts down it will join half a dozen other commercial storefronts on the east side of Broadway and the west side of Columbus Avenue between 66th and 68th streets that have closed in the past year.Ĭinema Studio was one of only a handful of theaters in New York to regularly schedule foreign films.
